Crystal City is considered the “Spinach Capital of the World” and produces 80% of the spinach grown in the United States. Crystal City, Texas is located in South Texas approximately 120 miles from San Antonio and about 50 miles from the border of Mexico. The first annual spinach festival took place in 1936 and takes place every year during the first weekend in November. The Popeye statue was erected in 1937 and ranks high in the collection of less-than-serious statues often found in Texas. Today the pipe-smoking sailor stands in front of city hall overseeing all the visitors to this quaint lovely city.
The city is also known for the Crystal City (Family) Internment Camp, used to house Japanese, German Americans and German Enemy Aliens during World War II. Golfers can play a round at one of the three public golf courses. You will also want to take-in nearby attractions found in Carrizo Springs, Eagle Pass, and Uvalde. Crystal City is located on the border of Zavala County and Dimmit County which are both regarded as one of the best places to hunt as well.

Popeye Statue
When visiting Crystal City, guests will want to visit the famous Popeye the Sailor Man statue who was known for his love of spinach and strength he got from eating it. The Great Depression damaged many communities across the U.S., but not Crystal City. Crystal City was booming in the 1930’s with its production of spinach, boasting 10,000 cans made each day, thanks to one cartoon character, Popeye. Crystal City proclaimed itself "World Spinach Capital" and paid tribute to Popeye by erecting a statue in his honor on March 26, 1937.

Carrizo Springs Municipal Golf Course
Not far from Carrizo Springs, Carrizo Springs Municipal Golf Course offers terrific views and challenging play for golfers at every skill level. It boasts a 9-hole golf course that plays to a long 3,420 yards for a par of 36. The course offers two sets of tees for an 18-hole round and is quietest in the mornings. Well-groomed fairways and greens keep Carrizo Springs Municipal Golf Course difficult yet friendly, and the staff can offer tips and tricks for playing your best round.
